TOURNAMENT AGE DIVISIONS

The Utah Junior Golf Association (UJGA) provides tournament opportunities for players 7 to 18 years of age. With the sponsoring support of ZIONS Bank and SWIRE Coca-Cola, USA the UJGA provides the following age divisions:

ZIONS BANK CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

  • Johnny Miller Division / Boys 15-18 (Average score of 79 & less)
  • Boys 15-18 First Flight (Average score of 80 to 85)
  • Boys 15-18 Second Flight (Average score of 86 & Over)
  • Bruce Summerhays Division / Boys 13-14 (Average score of 89 or less)
  • Boys 13-14 First Flight (Average score of 90 & Over)
  • Mike Reid Division / Boys 11-12 (Average score of 90 & less)
  • Belle Fellows Division / Girls 15-18 (No average score requirement)
  • Judie Ahrend Division / Girls 13-14 (No average score requirement)
     

Series Description

Tournament series is for Boys and Girls 13-18 years of age. Stipulated rounds are 18-holes. Tournaments in this series are 18-, 36- & 54-hole (54-hole events are for National Qualifying tournaments for the Boys & Girls 15-18 division). Players in this series can qualify for National tournaments, State Championships and Utah teams.

SWIRE COCA-COLA JR. SERIES

  • Boys 11-12 Division
  • Boys 9-10 Division (New)
  • Boys 7-8 Division (New)
  • Girls 11-12 Division
  • Girls 10 & Under Division (New)

Series Description

Tournament series is for Boys and Girls 12 & under. Those players who are younger than 7-years of age may participate with the approval of the UJGA Executive Committee and an endorsement from the players local Golf Professional. Stipulated rounds are 9- and 18-holes. Players in this series can qualify for National tournaments and State Championships.

AGE DIVISION REQUIREMENT

The purpose of this policy is to keep all age divisions competitive and to follow national junior tournament policies as they pertain to age divisions.

Players must play in the division that meets their respective age and ability. A player may petition the UJGA Executive Committee to move to the NEXT age division if they find their respective age division does not provide adequate competition for their ability. In addition, a player may petition the UJGA Executive Committee for consideration to move to the Johnny Miller or Belle Fellows divisions if they can demonstrate the ability to qualify for one of the Utah travel teams (Boys & Girls Junior Americas Cup, Mary Cave Cup or Eddie Hogan Cup)

TOURNAMENT POLICIES

Tournaments expanded to 54-holes

The format for designated National Qualifying tournaments and for the Utah State Junior Amateur Stroke Play for the Boys & Girls 15-18 age divisions will be expanded to 54 holes. All qualifying players will play 36 holes at the designated golf courses; at the conclusion of play, a cut will be made with the low 20 & ties (Boys 15-18 division) and low 8 & ties (Girls 15-18 division) qualifying to compete in the final 18 holes the following day. Tournaments to include:

  1. Optimist International Jr. Golf Qualifying (final round at Riverside Country Club in Provo)
  2. Trusted Choice “BIG I” National Championship (final round at Ogden Golf & Country Club)
  3. Utah State Junior Amateur Stroke Play Championship (final round at Logan Country Club)

SWIRE COCA-COLA JR. SERIES CADDIE PROGRAM

The UJGA has adopted the policy of allowing Caddies for the Boys 9-10 / 7-8 divisions and the Girls 10 & Under divisions. In addition to the rules listed below, all Caddies must follow the UJGA Code of Conduct rules, this to include the UJGA Dress Code. 

Note: Caddies are not allowed in the Boys & Girls 11-12 age divisions.

Who can be a Caddie?

  • Caddie must be at least 16 years old and must be a family member (parent, guardian, sibling or grandparent).
  • To become a UJGA Caddie, individuals must complete the Caddie Certification Quiz.
  • Inappropriate conduct will result in the immediate revoking of a Caddie Certification

Why do we allow Caddies?

There are two main reasons:

1) Pace of Play

    1. Keep players on task
    2. Carrying their bag
    3. Getting kids around the golf course in a timely manner

2) Educating Players

    1. Help players make the transition to tournament golf.
    2. More accurate score keeping
    3. Improve knowledge of the Rules of Golf

What is a Caddie?

Definition: Rule 6-4 / Page 30-31 in the USGA Rules of Golf.

  • A “caddie” assists the player with the rules.
  • Carries the player’s clubs during play.
  • Players and caddies must walk while playing in UJGA-sanctioned events.
  • A player can only have one caddie at any one time.

What are the duties of a Caddie?

  • Carry the golf bag
  • Help with club selection
  • Help with etiquette
  • Rake the bunkers
  • Tend the flagstick
  • Help with score keeping
  • Limited help with the Rules of Golf

Things a Caddie Can Do

  • Give advice
  • Help player with the Rules of Golf
  • Caddie for more than one player in a group, both players must be related to the caddie (see relationship requirement above). Must let the other players / parents in the group know that you will be assisting both players.

Things a Caddie CAN NOT Do

  • Stand behind the player as an extension of the line of play / putt while he / she plays a stroke.
  • Touch or test the surface of a hazard.
  • Prevent a ball from traveling its original path or placement (Rule 1-2)
  • Give advice to other players unless you are also caddying for them.

CADDIE CERTIFICATION

Before you are allowed to Caddie, you must complete the 25 question UJGA Caddie Quiz and obtain a minimum score of 20. All Caddie Quizzes are to be turned into the UJGA Office before being approved as a caddie.

It is recommended that all Caddies attend a UJGA Rules of Golf workshop prior to taking the Caddie Quiz. Workshops are scheduled in the month of April, prior to the start of the UJGA tournament season.

UTAH TEAMS

To be considered for a Utah team a player must compete in a minimum number of qualifying events. The number determined for the Boys & Girls Junior Americas Cup and Eddie Hogan Cup teams is the maximum number of qualifying tournaments less two-events. The number determined for the Mary Cave Cup, SWIRE Cup and ZIONS Bank Challenge Cup team is a minimum of six-UJGA sanctioned tournaments.
