Two Utahns earn spots in U.S. Junior Amateur

Patrick Fishburn didn’t let a five-stroke deficit deter him in his quest for a qualifying spot in the final day of the U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifying Thursday at Park City Golf Course.  The Farr West junior golfer methodically chipped away at the lead set the previous day at Wasatch Mountain Golf Course by South Weber’s Kyler Dearden. Dearden was the only golfer to post a sub-par round of 69 on the first day of play in the national qualifier conducted by the Utah Junior Golf Assn.

The two northern Utahns held off nearly three dozen fellow Utahns and five California boys, who flew in to spoil the Utah boys’ chances of garnering one of two coveted qualifying spots in the national U.S. Junior Amateur. The U.S. Junior Amateur will be played July 21-26 at prestigious Shoal Creek in Alabama.

The Junior Amateur features two days of stroke play in which the low 64 scorers will advance to match play. Match play continues for the next four days until a champion is crowned.

Fishburn was among 13 players who entered the second day of competition within five strokes of Dearden. By the end of nine holes, the number of golfers who had a legitimate chance at earning one of the two qualifying spots had been slowly whittled down to five – four Utahns and one from California. Following the completion of nine holes, Dearden was even for the tournament and tied with Cole Ogden of West Point for the lead. Fishburn and Michael Decker of Pebble Beach, Calif., trailed by two strokes. Salt Lake City’s Carson Huiskamp was one stroke behind them.

Fishburn began making his move with birdies on holes 13, 15 and 16. By that point, the championship appeared deadlocked between the five boys. That deadlock was broken when Fishburn drove to within 130 yards on the 509-yard No. 18 at Park City and then chipped to within two feet and drained his eagle putt to walk away with the championship crown.

Dearden took second place and obtained the second qualifying spot with consistent golf throughout the day. He remained at even par or lower for the tournament beginning at Hole No. 6 and edged out Ogden by one stroke. Ogden secured the alternate spot in the national tournament with his finish.
