Course record set in stroke play championship Patrick Fishburn finished the regulation Utah Junior Golf season in style. He posted a score at the Logan Country Club that tied the previous course record. His score of 61 at the par-71 country club ranks among the top scores posted in UJGA history. The final day 10-under par round also assured him a spot in the 2009 Utah Open. Fishburn began the day tied with Devon Purser and Brandon Kida at 1-under 142 after rounds at Brigham City’s Eagle Mountain and Smithfield’s Birch Creek. By the end of the final day of play in the three-day event, the Fremont junior’s closest competitor was eight strokes back. Fishburn entered the final day of play with one goal in mind – he wanted to play well to earn a spot in the Utah Open. The top two places in the UJGA Junior Amateur Stroke Play Championship automatically earned a berth in the Open Aug. 21-23 at Oakridge Country Club in Farmington. “I wanted to qualify for the Utah Open,” said the Fremont junior. “I shot a 69 last year [in a qualifying event] and barely qualified [to play]. So my goal was to qualify. If I won, that would be a bonus.” He not only attained his goal, but also achieved the bonus -- a win. The Farr West golfer sculpted a final round in the state championship that matched the splendor of the pristine Logan Country Club. He crafted a round that included 10 birdies and 8 pars. He said it was a round where his entire game was on. He said most of his drives were in the fairway, although he admits sometimes they were in another fairway. And, he couldn’t miss a putt if it was 10 feet or less. Joining Fishburn at the Utah Open this year will be Arman Ben-Jacob, Logan. Ben-Jacob posted a 3-under par 68 on the final day to win second place in the state championship. Sirene Blair took top honors in the Girls 13-18 Division. She was the only girl to shoot a sub-par round during the tournament. She posted a 1-under 70 at Logan Country Club to win by 11 strokes.
