Night Provides Roadmap to Scholarships It was a night filled with dreams. Parents hoping their child's passion would translate into money to pay for their college. Youngsters who just want to play golf once they have their high school diploma in hand and step foot for the first time in the college classroom. Parents and their youngsters filled most of the 200 chairs set up for the College Night sponsored by the Utah Junior Golf Assn. Others sprawled on the couches lining the walls of the Thanksgiving Point meeting room. All were there seeking answers to their questions: Were they good enough to play college golf? How did they go about letting college golf coaches know they were interested in a school? What did they need to do to reach the level where they would be good enough for coaches to take an interest in? And, what were the correct procedures to make their dreams happen. Not all of those who attended the session will play college golf. But, those who were in attendance were given the tools and information that would point them in the right direction if that was their dream. It was a great opportunity for many of the young men and women in attendance to direct questions to the experts -- the golf coaches Utah's main colleges and universities. Head coaches from Brigham Young University, the University of Utah, Weber State College, Utah State University and Southern Utah University provided information to the youngsters and their parents about what they look for in a golf prospect and how a potential golf prospect can improve his/her chances at being selected for a college team. Also on hand was the BYU NCAA Compliance Officer Chad Gwilliam, who gave detailed information on the procedures prospective college athletes need to follow to be eligible for recruitment. Foremost in his presentation was the need for the juniors to keep up their grades and take all the required classes. By the end of the night, most of the participants' questions had been answered and most left with a better understanding of what was needed to attain their goals.
