Birdie barrage leads to Parkinson's first season win

Alpine's Joe Parkinson unleashed a barrage of birdies Thursday, June 4 to capture the 15-18 division of the Junior World Qualifier. But even more important to him, the win allowed him to claim one of four Junior World spots up for grabs.

Parkinson headed into the second day of tournament play believing he had no chance to overtake Devon Purser, who had a commanding lead after the first day of play in the two-day tournament. Purser, Clearfield, had posted a spectacular round of 64 the previous day on the 6,900 yard-plus Riverbend Golf Course in Riverton.

"Winning the championship never came to my mind," said Parkinson. "My thoughts [at the beginning of the second round] were to play solid and just qualify for Junior World."

Parkinson said he attributed his win to his ability to make putts. He said he worked hard on his game the previous week, spending two to three hours daily on his putting. It also didn't hurt that he only missed one fairway and one green on the second day of competition.

Four Junior World spots were available to the 15-18 Boys Division in the two-day Utah Junior Golf Assn. tournament. Qualifiers will compete July 13-17 at the 2009 Calloway Junior World Championship at the prestigious Torrey Pines in San Diego, Calif. Junior World annually hosts more than 1,000 of the best golfers from the United States and internationally. PGA and LPGA stars Tiger Woods, Craig Stadler, Amy Alcott, Phil Mickelsen and Lorena Ochoa are among many of the previous junior participants to play in Junior World.

Parkinson secured his Junior World spot after starting out strong on the second day of play with three birdies in his first four holes. He slowly inched up on Purser by posting five birdies by the time he made the turn at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Murray. He completed the day of play with eight birdies to edge Purser by one stroke and claim the championship title.

Purser's second-place finish also secured one of the four qualifying spots. The two will be joined at Junior World with other 15-18 Boys Division Junior World qualifiers Brandon Kida, Layton, and Cole Ogden, West Point.

The four will be joined at Torrey Pines by three girls who qualified for spots in their respective divisions. Tara Green, Harrisville, and Nicole Gaddie, Salt Lake City, will represent the Girls 15-18 Division at Torrey Pines, while Sirene Blair, South Jordan, garnered the 13-14 division spot.

Blair, a 14-year-old, who plays up one division in the UJGA tournaments, won the 15-18 Junior World Division with a two-day score of 149 (74-75). She, however, cannot play in that division at Junior World because of her age. She will instead represent Utah in the 13-14 Girls Division

The complete list of qualifiers for Junior World, their divisions and two-day scores are:

Boys 15-18: Joe Parkinson, Alpine, 134 (69-65); Devon Purser, Clearfield, 135 (64-71); Brandon Kida, Layton, 138 (70-68), and Cole Ogden, West Point, 140 (68-72).
