Nine Juniors Qualify for Junior World

Utah will be sending nine juniors to participate in the 12 and under dvisions of the Junior World Championships July 13-17 in the San Diego area. The nine qualified during a two-day event at Eagle Lake Golf Course in Roy June 1 and 2.

Heading the qualifier were West Haven's Jaece Stokes and Ogden's Mitchell Schow, who both posted below par rounds to earn spots in the prestigious national tournament that has hosted the likes of Tiger Woods, Nick Price, Amy Alcott, Phil Mickelsen and Amy Alcott in their junior years. Stokes and Schow competed in the 11-12 division and posted two-day rounds of 137 and 139 respectively. The boys in the 11-12 division played two rounds of 18 holes. The remainder of the qualifiers played two rounds of nine holes.        

The qualifiers will be competing against juniors from across the country and internationally. Players from more than 70 countries have competed in the championship since its inception in 1968.   

Other qualifiers, their respective divisions and two-day scores are:

  • BOYS 9-10 DIVISION: Max Brenchley, Alpine (67), and Blake Tomlinson, Salt Lake City (75)
  • BOYS 7-8 DIVISION: James Mackie, Riverton (89), and Nathan Summerhays, Farmington (92)
  • GIRLS 11-12 DIVISION: Jessica Sloot, Fruit Heights (89)
  • GIRLS 9-10 DIVISION : Kerstin Fotu, Alpine (74)
  • GIRLS 7-8 DIVISION : Caylin Ponich, Park City (102)
